A garden office can create a dedicated workspace without extending the house, but a building that looks good in a brochure is not automatically suitable for working through a British winter.

What matters most in a garden office?

1

Year-round comfort

Walls, roof and floor insulation, good glazing and controllable heating matter far more than cosmetic upgrades if the office will be occupied through winter.

2

Usable workspace

Think about desk size, storage, monitor position, door swing and internal dimensions rather than buying purely on the external footprint.

3

Complete project cost

Check foundations, installation, electrics, flooring, heating and internet provision before comparing one supplier with another.

Insulation is only part of the answer

A properly insulated office should lose heat more slowly, but that alone does not guarantee comfort. Heating, ventilation, glazing and the quality of the overall construction all influence how the room behaves in winter and summer.

Our rule: Don’t buy a garden office simply because the brochure says “fully insulated”. Ask for the complete wall, floor and roof specification and, where available, the calculated thermal performance.

How much does a good garden office cost?

There is no single useful figure because the market ranges from small delivered pods to large professionally installed premium garden rooms.

For regular year-round use, buyers should generally compare the cost of the finished workspace rather than the advertised shell. A lower headline price may still require separate spending on the base, electrics, heating, flooring and installation.

Budget under £10,000?

Compact pods and some entry-level insulated rooms can fall within this price range, but check the included specification carefully.

Before ordering a garden office

Check the planning position

Height and proximity to the boundary can affect permitted-development rights, and commercial use can create additional considerations.

Check what’s actually included

Ask whether foundations, internal electrics, the final house connection, flooring, decoration, heating and VAT are included in the quotation.

Start with how you intend to work.

Choose the specification around occupancy, comfort and practical requirements first. Size, finish and optional extras should come afterwards.
